Council’s proactive vision, along with the input of approximately $3.11 million from the State Government through the ‘Works for Queensland’ program is transforming the former animal pound and sewage treatment plant site into Stage 1 of a Capricorn Coast Homemaker Centre.
Strategically positioned to capitalise on key main road exposure, the landmark project, situated on approximately nine hectares of Council owned land adjacent to the Tanby Road roundabout, will this year progressively begin its transition to become a major ‘large format’ retail hub.
Mayor Bill Ludwig said with Reece Plumbing already constructed and operational this is a real success story, especially given that a little more than two years ago the area was listed as a contaminated site.
“The other good news is, between the financial support provided by the State Government and proceeds from the sale of the land to Gibb Group, Stage 1 of the project is likely to be cost-neutral to ratepayers and should realise a positive financial return when Stage 2 is completed,” Mayor Ludwig said.
“It is anticipated Stage 1 of Capricorn Coast Homemaker Centre will see at least 60 long-term local jobs created this year, a greater range of retail opportunity available for residents, while ensuring the flow-on benefits of retail expenditure are retained here on the Capricorn Coast.
“Gibb Group, who are undertaking the development of Stage 1, have indicated that more announcements are likely to be made in the near future regarding construction timelines for other national retail outlets.
“The early successes in attracting major tenants to Stage 1 of the Capricorn Coast Homemaker Centre has further reinforced investment confidence is returning to the Capricorn Coast,” Cr Ludwig said.
Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the Capricorn Coast Homemaker Centre was a significant infrastructure project that the State Government has been pleased to support given the long-term retail and service industry jobs it will generate.
“This project will not only enhance and develop the area’s retail sector, but it will also deliver a significant boost to our economy during the construction phases,” Ms Lauga said.
