Fire affected land managers – stock and infrastructure assistance

Local Land Services (LLS) team are on the ground to help connect land managers with the services and support they need right now.

Local Land Services with the Department of Primary Industries are particularly focussed on animal welfare and are running the Agriculture and Animal Services Hotline – 1800 814 647. Producers are encouraged to call the Hotline to report damage and stock losses, as well as request assistance. Available help includes:

Emergency fodder Emergency stock water Veterinary assistance Stock destruction and burial Livestock feeding and management advice

Wherever firefighting operations are winding down, LLS will be in contact with fire affected landholders in coming days.

When safe to do so, veterinary assessment teams will visit properties in the fire zones.

If you are unable to call into the 1800 number, please have someone do so on your behalf.

Emergency Fodder

AASFA provides Emergency Fodder Assistance to bushfire affected landholders (including non ‘rate payers’ or people without a holding reference number) for short-term relief, usually up to three days, to enable landholders to make alternative arrangements for livestock feed.

Emergency Water

Bushfire affected landholders can access a short term supply of water where animal welfare is at risk and infrastructure has been damaged e.g. pipes or tanks melted.

The Agriculture and Animal Services Functional Area (AASFA) is supporting fire affected landholders through the provision of emergency water removed by the RFS for firefighting purposes if there is an immediate animal welfare need. Impacted landholders are encouraged to contact 1800 814 647 to discuss their needs.

Animal assessment and destruction.

Staff will assess animals and euthanise those that are too badly injured for treatment in consultation with the owner. Animals may still require care by a commercial veterinarian rather than government vets once assessed. Ongoing care maybe supported through DPI.

Animal burial

AAFSA will coordinate the burial and disposal of animals where a public health issue exists or to minimise the distress of owners or the community.
