Raga Shambhala – World Music

There is no doubt that Tibetan singer-songwriter Tenzin Choegyal is a man of passion. It is evident in his music, which draws strongly on his nomadic roots, and his tireless efforts to preserve the traditions of Tibet.

Likewise, Japanese musicians Taro Terahara and Ayako Ikeda became enthralled by the traditions of Indian classical music and now dream of bringing the beauty and evocative sounds of the bansuri (classical Indian flute) and the table (Indian drums) to parts of the world that have yet to hear them.

Tenzin Choegyal, Taro Terahara and Ayako Ikeda perform the Raga Shambhala Concert in the Arts Theatre on Sunday 2 February, 2.00 pm.

Drawing on such rich musical traditions, these artists come together for a brief visit to Tasmania to share the music and stories of these ancient cultures. They perform soaring, nomadic-style melodies, thoughtful flute pieces, Buddhist mantras and playful folk tunes that reflect the experiences of the Tibetan people and invoke the vastness of space and the beauty of the high Tibetan plateau.

This is a rare opportunity to spend time with these world-renowned musicians, share their music and find out more about this intriguing part of the world.
