We’ve announced the winner of the R & M McGivern Prize, and now it’s time for you to cast your vote for your favourite artwork in the People’s Choice award.

Visitors to the R & M McGivern finalists’ exhibition have the opportunity to vote from 45 pre-selected finalists for the People’s Choice prize, valued at $1000.

The artwork that receives the most votes will be announced at 5pm on Friday 31 January.

The exhibition of finalists is currently on display across two venues within the Ringwood arts precinct – ArtSpace at Realm and Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery – until 2 February 2020.

The finalists’ exhibition shares conceptual, abstract and literal interpretations based on the theme ‘Anthropocene’, and explores the highly topical issue of human habitation and our impact on the environment.

Highly regarded Melbourne artist Nadine Christensen was announced as the recipient of the 2019 R & M McGivern Prize for her work, ‘Hang in there’, with the artist awarded the prestigious title of ‘most outstanding artwork’ and $25,000 in prize money.

Christensen’s winning painting becomes a valued addition to the Maroondah City Council Art Collection, a significant public collection of Australian art.

About the R & M McGivern Prize

Promoting artistic excellence in painting, the R & M McGivern Prize is a prestigious $25,000 national acquisitive award, along with a $1000 non-acquisitive People’s Choice Prize, and is a valuable opportunity for Maroondah City Council to build upon its distinguished art collection.

The R & M McGivern Prize was established by the will of the late artist, writer and resident Muriel McGivern, and is a legacy of Muriel’s support of the arts in Maroondah.

The $25,000 prize is awarded by the Perpetual Trustee Company every three years for an outstanding artwork in the medium of painting (oil, gouache, acrylic or watercolour) and is open to artists Australia-wide.

Shortlisted works for the R & M McGivern finalists’ exhibition can be seen at:

ArtSpace at Realm (Ringwood Town Square) 179 Maroondah Highway, Ringwood. Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery, 32 Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood.
