Kerang’s inaugural parkrun event has been deemed a success, with around 170 people taking to the five-kilometre course on 18 January 2020.
The Kerang Regional parkrun group have spent the past few years working to bring the popular parkrun program to the town, which allows participants to take part in free, weekly, five-kilometre timed runs.
“Council is proud to have supported the implementation of Kerang Regional parkrun program, held in the Kerang Regional Park, adjacent to the majestic Loddon River,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.
“Event organisers successfully applied for $5,000 from Council’s Community Grants Program in August 2019, which has assisted with start-up costs associated with bringing this successful program to Kerang.
“Council will also undertake enhancement works along the parkrun course, including the installation of directional signage and picnic facilities, thanks to funding from the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Programme – Extension.”
Kerang Regional parkrun sessions occur on Saturdays at 8am, with participants to meet at the western end of Wyndham Street.
“The Gannawarra is proud to have two parkrun sessions held each week, with the popular Cohuna program held every Saturday at Garden Park from 8am, continuing to grow in popularity,” Mayor Learmonth said.
“Not only does parkrun enable participants to be physically active, it helps promote social connectedness.
“No matter your fitness level or background, the parkrun program is an ideal way to keep fit and experience the natural beauty of the Gannawarra.”
