Starting next month, the 2020 Midsumma Festival celebrates Wyndham’s inclusivity and visibility of the LGBTIQ community.

Cultural Diversity portfolio holder, Cr Henry Barlow, said it was important for the community to show their support to the LGBTIQ community to continue Wyndham’s welcoming and inclusive attitude.

“Next month we have two free events that the whole family can attend to celebrate diversity while enjoying top-quality entertainment and delicious locally-made food,” Cr Barlow said.

The first free event is Park Lounge, a family-friendly event, suitable for all ages.

Cr Barlow said residents could expect a stunning line-up of artists, performers, cabaret divas and musicians – and tasty Sri Lankan food.

Artist and equality advocate Tristan Meecham will host the event, as he entertains the audience with banter and applause-inspiring costume changes as you quench your thirst with beverages from the pop-up bar.

Artist and theatre-maker group PO PO MO CO will present Once Upon a Drag Storytime, a highly energised comedy to celebrate gender and diverse families.

Other fabulous acts include Yana Alana and Tha Paranas, taking a refreshing break from cookie-cutter celebrity; cabaret noir artist Jex Lopez; and Kilia Tipa’s movement-based practice reflecting on queer belonging and cultural performativity.

Council is also hosting an exhibition called Out is Out, which exhibits work by people who paved the way for LGBTIQ self-expression and freedom and a new generation of activists.

The exhibition challenges the generation gap and the impact consumerist cultures have on generations to come. It also tackles what it will mean to be queer in the future.

To show your support for the LGBTIQ community, join the Western Region Councils of Metropolitan Melbourne at Midsumma Pride march in St Kilda. Just look for the Wave P group.
