A bright future for Liverpool’s city centre thanks to master plan

Liverpool Council is paving the way to a greener, brighter, vibrant and active city centre for Sydney’s third CBD with a new master plan on public exhibition.

The Draft Liverpool City Centre Public Domain Master Plan includes increased tree canopy, wider footpaths and dedicated cycle ways among the many improvements for Liverpool city centre.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller invited those who use the city centre to have their say on the 10-year plan.

“As our skyline changes, so must our city streets and public spaces,” Mayor Waller said.

“The Draft Liverpool City Centre Public Domain Master Plan provides a cohesive approach to development in the city centre and a useful set of standards for council, private developers and local businesses.

“It paints a picture of a vibrant city centre with jobs, prosperity and an 18-hour economy.”

Developed after extensive consultation with the community, government agencies and businesses, the master plan provides a list of the public infrastructure to best support the vibrant economy of Sydney’s third CBD as Liverpool attracts more residents, workers and visitors.

Street trees and vegetation, public art, furniture, signs and paving materials are among the improvements suggested in the plan.

“It’s going to be of enormous benefit as our city centre grows and changes,” Mayor Waller said.

“Our city has great bones. We are built on the same plan as Melbourne’s city centre and now we are going to add to that the very best in contemporary urban design.

“We already have some wonderful spaces in our CBD like the recently-refurbished Bigge Park and Macquarie Mall. This is a plan for the next 10 years that will guide us in improving the rest of the city centre.”

“Our city centre is already easy to navigate, but more trees, improved paving and better lighting will make it a better place to live, work, study and play, as well as supporting an 18-hour economy.

“This plan will also help us to take advantage of our biggest natural asset, the Georges River.”

The draft master plan is on public exhibition until 28 February 2020.
