Cardinia Shire’s Australia Day 2020 award winners were announced as part of Council’s Australia Day celebrations on Sunday.
The Australia Day 2020 award winners are:
Citizen of the year: Luke Williams Senior citizen of the year: Robert Porter Young citizen of the year: Jayden Kruzicevic-King Community event of the year: Cardinia Australia Day Event 2019Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield congratulated the winners and nominees, and thanked them for their commitment and important contributions to the Cardinia Shire community.
“This Australia Day we acknowledged and celebrated outstanding Australians and I look forward to continuing to work together to make our shire the exceptional place it is,” Cr Springfield said.
“As the lead Pastor for Follow Church and a driving force behind The Bless Collective initiative, this year’s Citizen of the Year, Luke Williams, is an inspiration to us all as he has worked to ensure that Cardinia Shire’s most vulnerable residents have somewhere to turn in hard times.
“Our Senior Citizen or the Year, Robert Porter, has been recognised for his volunteer activities in the local community, including his role as the Chair of the Officer Recreation Reserve for more than 40 years. He has also held positions with the Officer and District Community Association, the Officer Union Church and the Officer Primary School Council.
“Jayden Kruzicevic-King was a fitting winner of our Young Person of the Year award. As a youth helper at the 1st Cockatoo Scout Group, Jayden assists program leaders with the Joeys program. He also collects plastic bottle tops for not-for-profit organisation Envision Hands, and is a regular helping hand at the Cockatoo Market, the Monbulk Cricket Club and Cockatoo Primary School.
“The Community Event of the Year was awarded to Cardinia Australia Day Event 2019; a much-loved event organised by The Lakeside Residents Group. Last year the event attracted about 3,000 people from across the shire and gave many new Australian citizens and their families the opportunity to stay on to enjoy an afternoon of Australian culture.
“Without the efforts and dedication of people like our Australia Day nominees and award winners, our shire would not be the great place it is.”
Australia Day celebrations also occurred across the shire at free events in Beaconsfield, Bunyip, Cockatoo, Koo Wee Rup, Lang Lang, and at the Cardinia Shire outdoor pools.
