71 parks, 35 playgrounds, 10 sports fields, seven skate parks, 20 hard courts (tennis/netball/basketball), and two pools – these are some of the open spaces Byron Shire Council manages for the community.
The total value of these assets is $18 million and they are important to residents, and visitors, who use them for a wide range of purposes - to exercise, as a place to meet, play sport, walk the dog or just to relax and unwind.
Managing these open spaces on behalf of the community is a big job and Council is preparing a new Open Spaces Asset Management Plan (OSAMP) for the next 10 years.
“To inform the OSAMP we would like feedback from people who currently use our parks, playgrounds, sports fields and pools,” Byron Shire Council’s Asset Management Coordinator, Blyth Short said.
This includes: • Condition of the facility • Amenity • Functionality • Disability access • Capacity • Availability
“Constructive feedback from people will allow Council to prioritise work, improvements and upgrades as well as determining if there are actually enough facilities to meet residents’ needs,” Mrs Short said.
“We want people to quality rate the open space infrastructure they use, what is important to them, how often they use them, and what and where they would like Council to spend funds,” she said.
The best way to provide feedback is via a survey where people can select, on a map, the area that they use or are interested in. The survey takes less than five minutes.
“This is also an opportunity for people to comment on Council’s companion animal exercise areas, and staff will use this information as a basis for future decision on the location and size of off-lead and on-lead exercise areas,” Mrs Short said.
