Residents can clear out their homes while playing their part in protecting our environment, by safely disposing of unwanted household chemicals for free on Saturday 15 February.

Tonnes of household chemicals are expected to be dropped off at Council’s biannual Chemical Clean-Out, which is why this year residents can dispose of their chemicals between 9am-3:30pm at the Campsie Customer Service car park in Shakespeare Street, Campsie.

Household items that can be dropped off include:

• Left-over paint; • Pesticides; • Gas bottles; • Pool chemicals; • Smoke detectors; • Car batteries; • Fluorescent light globes and tubes; and • Oils.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the Chemical Clean-Out in April 2019 saw more than 560 residents dispose of their chemicals, with 21,863 kilograms of waste collected in one day.

“Chemicals can be very toxic and harmful to the environment, particularly our waterways, so it is important to dispose of them appropriately,” he said.

“We are proud to offer residents a convenient and safe way to dispose of their chemicals at no cost, and we encourage everyone to make full use of this opportunity.

“Once residents have dropped off their household chemicals, they are then safely disposed of and, in some cases, recycled – like old batteries and fluorescent globes.”

Important tips for transporting your household chemicals to the drop off location:

• Don’t mix chemicals, as this may produce dangerous reactions; • Wherever possible, keep all chemicals in their original containers; • Ensure containers are clearly labelled, however if you don’t know the contents, label the container ‘unknown chemical’; • Wrap containers holding liquids securely in newspaper, place in sturdy bags and then in a plastic bucket or tray; and • Transport chemicals in the boot of your car, away from passengers.

This project is a NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded by the waste levy.
