Riverdale Community Centre Receives State Funding

A new community facility in the west of Tarneit is one step closer to becoming a reality, following a funding boost from the State Government.

Mayor Cr Josh Gilligan joined Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood Education Sonya Kilkenny MP at the site of the Riverdale Community Centre this morning, where the State Government announced $4 million towards the Wyndham City project through the Children’s Facilities Capital Fund and the Growing Suburbs Fund.

Cr Gilligan welcomed the funding, and thanked the State Government for their support for the project.

“Once complete, this centre will provide the fast-growing suburb of Tarneit with access to early education and care services, including kindergarten rooms, maternal and child health services, consulting rooms, a gathering space for the community, and programs to suit all ages,” Cr Gilligan said.

“A key component in the design of this building is sustainability – and we will ensure that we are minimising the negative environmental impact at all stages, from design, to construction, and once complete and operational.”

“On behalf of Wyndham City, I thank the State Government for helping us to build the infrastructure our growing community needs.”

Urban Futures Portfolio Holder, Cr Intaj Khan, said the centre was an example of Council planning ahead, delivering infrastructure in line with residential development, so that services are available when the community needs them.

“Population forecasts predict that by 2031, Tarneit’s population will grow by 53,000 residents to 75,000. It’s important that we have the services and infrastructure in place before we experience this population boom,” Cr Khan said. 

The community will be invited to participate in consultation to inform the planning of the Riverdale Community Centre, which will be opened in 2021.
