Wyndham City Council is calling on Year 10 students to take part in its Bright Futures Work Experience program.

Wyndham City Mayor and Council’s Learning City portfolio holder Cr Josh Gilligan said offering high school students work experience allowed the next generation of leaders and career-orientated workers to explore the environment of local government.

“Students have the option to choose from a wide range of careers here at Council,” Cr Gilligan said.

“They can spend time helping the kindergarten and youth services teams, see how the town planners work, how the City’s human services department operates and even how we manage waste is our growing City – and that’s just a few of the departments calling on our young people to take up a five-day placement.”

“Students will take home a greater knowledge of their area of interest and gain confidence and professional connections after their stint with Council.”

“And we also enjoy hearing fresh ideas from young people and helping them establish their careers.”

“Last year 108 Year 10 students took part in Council’s Bright Futures Work Experience program and we hope to have just as many this year.”

One of Wyndham’s newest employees, Martin Lagamba, who received a Year 10 work experience placement with Council in 2014 and also took part in the university work experience program at Council last year, is now an accounting and reporting finance officer.

Hailing from Hoppers Crossing, Mr Lagamba was delighted to gain a 12-week work experience placement with the City’s finance department while studying for a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in accounting) at Australian Catholic University last year.

“Being from the area, I have a passion to help the local community and now I get to look into how the City’s different areas manage their bills and find ways to make savings where possible.”

The 2020 Bright Futures Work Experience program is expected to fill up quickly but together with the WynBay Local Learning and Employment Network and other local employers, Council will place as many students as possible in suitable work placements.
