Library Overdue Fines Abolished

Greater Dandenong Libraries will no longer fine borrowers who return books late, and to encourage people to return outstanding books, a fine-free amnesty will run for the month of February.

During Fine Free February members can return their late books without facing any consequences. Members who have outstanding fines can visit the libraries and talk to staff about wiping their fines for a fresh start.

The move comes as the world-wide library community debates the effectiveness of applying overdue fines. Studies show that in communities where fines have been abolished, more people are making use of their local libraries.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said the removal of fines would hopefully encourage people to return to the libraries.

“Our libraries want to encourage literacy and lifelong learning in our community, and by removing this small barrier I hope more people will make use of our wonderful libraries,” Cr Memeti said.

“Now is the ideal time to return any late books that you have at home. We will wipe any overdue fines, no questions asked.”

Up to 44 per cent of library members surveyed in 2019 said they would use the library more if there was no risk of accruing overdue fines.
