Historic pool table returned home

A pool table more than 100 years old was returned to where it originated from today. The pool table was originally owned and made in 1912 for Mr Schlam the manager of the Yarloop Timber Mill. The item was gifted to the Shire this month by Ronald Andrew Ried who had purchased it from his uncle Ron Hill.

The table has been passed down through generations in the Hill and Millington families. Elaine Hill recalled the time when she learnt to play pool at 10 years of age when the table was located at her family farm.

“The table was at our farm in Wagerup and that is where I learnt to play pool and I remember there was a room in the house that was specifically built for the table,” she said.

Peter Hill said he was pleased to see the table being put to great use again and remembered some great times playing when he had the table at his home in Cookernup in the mid-70s.

“We didn’t have snooker balls back then though, we created our own and we had fun,” he said.

Harvey Shire Council President Paul Gillett said it was great to see a piece of Yarloop’s history returned and in such great condition.

“This is fantastic for the new community centre and for visitors and residents to enjoy using the table,” he said.
