Council is calling on the community to have its say on a brand new public space proposed for the Dalby town centre.

Western Downs Regional Council has recently purchased the medium-sized lot at 120 Cunningham Street with the vision to create a vibrant new town square for the entire community to use and enjoy.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said the development would enhance the vibrancy of the Dalby CBD and offer an attractive new space for people to come together and enjoy their community.

“Council is committed to boosting economic and tourism opportunities for our towns; through the purchase of the former Mary’s Commercial Hotel site, we will create a brand-new space for residents and visitors to enjoy,” Cr McVeigh said.

“The site has potential to become an exciting, vibrant ‘town square’ which can be used throughout the day and night, offering somewhere new for people to meet and enjoy, as well as supporting a variety of community events such as the lighting of the Christmas tree and providing new opportunities for pop-up markets and food trucks.

“On top of offering a new place for locals to meet and relax, the site would also offer a vibrant, welcoming space for people visiting Dalby, with public art, lighting and other public infrastructure all potential aspects of the plan.”

Spokesperson for Parks, Open Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said Council would be seeking community consultation in coming weeks.

“Council will be hosting two community stalls during February to seek community feedback on the site which will then be used as part of the master planning process,” Cr Tillman said.

“Residents can also fill out an online survey via the Council website or by visiting the region’s libraries, visitor centres or any of the Council contact centres.”

Consultation will be open until midnight Thursday, 20 February.

A final report will then be put to the new Western Downs Regional Council following the March elections.
