Streeter’s Jetty closed for refurbishment works

Broome’s iconic Streeter’s Jetty has been closed to public access, as a refurbishment project gets underway.

As part of the Chinatown Revitalisation Stage 2 project, the jetty is scheduled to be refurbished to ensure its structural integrity long into the future.

Consultancy has been completed, which highlighted that main structural elements are compromised and could pose a risk to public safety.

The refurbishment project will include the reconstruction of the concrete retaining wall, replacement of a significant number of piles and installation of new decking.

The process will involve ensuring heritage regulations are adhered to, the sourcing of appropriate materials and structural engineering works.

A tender process will be undertaken to find a suitable contractor to complete the project.

Temporary fencing has been installed at the site to restrict access until works are undertaken and to ensure public safety.

Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said Streeter’s Jetty was an integral tourist site in Broome and its future longevity was very important.

“The refurbishment of Streeter’s Jetty is included in Stage 2 of the Chinatown Revitalisation project and the upcoming works will ensure that locals and tourists alike can enjoy it for many years to come,” she said.

“The process is underway and the Shire is committed to completing these works to refresh the jetty as soon as is practically possible.

“We thank the community for its patience while the refurbishment is undertaken.”

The Shire of Broome has undertaken a number of infrastructure projects already this year.

This has included the refurbishment of the wooden stairs at Cable Beach, which was completed in early February, three weeks ahead of schedule.
