Top flight rugby league will be coming to Fremantle this week with the local Fremantle Roosters rugby league club hosting the reigning NRL premiers the Sydney Roosters and the New Zealand Warriors.
The two clubs will be using Ken Allen Field in Beaconsfield as their base as they prepare for the NRL Nines tournament at Perth Oval this weekend.
The Sydney Roosters will be holding a junior clinic from 4.30-6pm on Wednesday 12 February and their men’s and women’s teams an open training session on Thursday 13 February at 2pm.
Roosters’ coaches Nathan Cayless and Matt King will also be hosting a Q&A Coaches Forum in the Club Room from 5-5.45pm on Wednesday.
The Warriors men will be holding an open training on Thursday from 11am-12pm, while the Warriors women will be holding an open training session from 4-5pm on Thursday.
Fremantle Roosters Senior President Steve Revere said it was a huge coup to have the NRL’s reigning champs coming to Fremantle.
“With the NRL Nines competition being held in WA it’s opened up the doors for several clubs to have their eastern states representatives in our state, so it’s going to be a great week,” Mr Revere said.
“With all grass roots clubs it’s always good to have a boost and have a top team come over and be associated with you and work with you.
“To have them here this week and be able to have a clinic with the juniors is absolutely fantastic.
“The juniors here are pretty strong anyway, but it’s always good to have a few more people come down and try out the sport.
“That’s the main thing to get some new people down to try it out and hopefully join up with the juniors, and then we can create the pathway from their up to the senior teams – the women’s and the men’s.”
The Sydney Roosters have won the past two NRL premierships, and are also the defending NRL Nines champions from when the tournament was last held in 2017.
Retired Sydney Swans AFL star Nick Davis will make a cross-code switch and line up with the Roosters for the Nines.
NRL Nines is a pre-season festival of rugby league and live entertainment being held at HBF Park on 14-15 February, featuring all 16 NRL and 4 NRLW teams.
