COUNCIL NEWS 12 FEBRUARY 2020

Australia Day celebrations were held on Sunday, 26 January, 2020 at the Grenfell Public School in ideal weather conditions with a very good crowd in attendance.

The Australia Day Special Guest Mr Andrew Lock OAM was very well received by the crowd and MC Michele Morley carried out her duties in a very articulate and efficient manner.

Winners of the main awards are detailed below:

It was wonderful to recognise, acknowledge and reward our residents who give freely of their time to volunteer in our community which is very much part of the Australian way of life.

All of the award winners were congratulated and thanked for their contribution to the Weddin Shire Community during 2019.

A citizenship ceremony for Mr David Rumps and Mr Teryck Young was carried out by the Mayor during the Australia Day celebrations on Sunday, 26 January 2020. The ceremony was attended by various family and friends and evoked a delighted response from the new citizens.

Council’s works program is continuing and the following works have been completed, are currently in progress or about to commence:

General maintenance Resealing works completed on Henry Lawson Way 1km section of Driftway Road rehab completed Newell Highway and Mid-Western Highway asphalt repairs in progress 2019-2020 Slashing program in progress for Mary Gilmore Way, Henry Lawson Way and Gooloogong Road, whilst completed for Newell Highway and Mid-Western Highway Maintenance grading was carried out on Lynchs Road, Bald Hills Road, Barkers Road and Wheatleys Road Henry Lawson Oval amenities pad construction completed. Building construction in progress. New sprinklers added to Henry Lawson Top Oval.

These works are all part of Councils works programme and are vital to ensure our assets are upgraded and maintained for the benefit of our residents.

There is certainly a lot happening in the next couple of months which is excellent as these events are very important to the economic and social fabric of our Shire.

Even with the beautiful rain that has recently fallen the effects of the drought are still being felt.  Residents are reminded that the Rural Financial Counselling Service NSW Central Region have advised that Financial Counsellor, John Beer is available to visit Grenfell.  The Rural Financial Counselling Service provides free impartial and confidential services to farmers and small agricultural businesses.  They also provide information and assistance with farm innovation funds, natural disaster assistance and can assist in helping clients with a better understanding of their financial position. Appointments are necessary and can be made on Ph 1800 940 404 or mobile 0408 973 723.

Residents are reminded that with Lake Rowlands well below historical levels Central Tablelands Water (CTW) resolved at its December Council meeting to implement Level 4 restrictions for the entire CTW supply network effective from 1 January 2020.

All local media (papers, televisions and radio) had been advised of the restrictions.

CTW will continue to closely monitor the level of Lake Rowlands and long term rainfall forecasts of the Bureau of Meteorology before recommending any future changes to the restriction level.

The current exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery is “Delight in Diversity” by Grenfell Artists Incorporated. This group of enthusiastic artists gather each week at the Rose Street rooms.  They work creatively on a wide variety of artistic endeavours in various media ranging from graphite, pencil, pen and ink, pastel, watercolour, acrylics and oils. Several members of the highly regarded art group have had successes in local, district and state art exhibitions.

The Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm & Sunday 10am -2pm.

The next movie to be screened at the Grenfell Cinema will be ‘Ford vs Ferrari” on Saturday, 14 March, 2020 at 8pm. Please see the adjacent advertisement for further details.

HENRY LAWSON FESTIVAL COMMITTEE MEETING

After community feedback, please be advised that a Henry Lawson Festival Meeting will be held Wednesday, 12 February 2020 at 6.30 pm at Grenfell Bowling Club to endeavor to reactivate the committee to hold a Festival Event this year.

There are currently various executive and co-ordinator positions that will be required to be filled for the festival event to proceed.

To undertake an Executive, co-ordinator position or to vote attendees will be required to become members of the Committee at a cost of $2.

GRENFELL AQUATIC CENTRE - CARNIVAL CLOSURES

Residents are hereby advised that the Grenfell Aquatic Centre will be closed for private Swimming Carnivals as below:

Sunday 16 February – closed 4:30pm onwards (Business House Relays) Wednesday 26 February – closed 10:00am till 3:00pm (THLHS Carnival)
