Local Disaster Management Group on Alert

Toowoomba Regional Council has activated its Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG).

After receiving significant rain over the past week and with more rain predicted over the coming days, Mayor Paul Antonio said Council had made the decision to activate the LDMG.

“Today we moved the LDMG to Alert as a result of the potential impacts to the community from the continued heavy rainfall that has and may continue to cause further flooding and flash flooding across the Region,” Mayor Antonio said.

“While this rain has certainly been most welcome, there are a number of areas within our Region that need to be on alert over the coming days. We have received some much-needed rain in our dams but overall the dam levels are still quite low.

“This is not a time for our residents to panic but it’s about making sure we are ready for whatever may come.

“While we are monitoring the entire Region, areas of most concern at this stage are the areas near the Oakey Creek catchment.

“In addition to this, the Condamine River in our western areas has peaked at Tummaville exceeding minor flood levels and could potentially peak at 6m at Cecil Plains later today (11 February).

“This same flooding is currently impacting on the eastern access to Millmerran via the Gore Highway at Centenary Bridge. It is below the bridge currently but may inundate the bridge as the peak moves downstream.

“The LDMG will continue to monitor these areas and provide advice to residents through Council’s communication channels.

“While we put these processes in place I would like to reinforce the message of “Be Prepared and Get Ready” to our residents.

“Make sure you have a plan in place, consider your pets, check on your neighbours, help those who are more vulnerable and in an emergency always call 000.

“We will also be making sand available for sandbagging to residents who would like to prepare themselves. Residents will be required to bring their own shovel and sandbags.”
