Liverpool City Council is hosting a free microchipping and vaccination day for cats and dogs at Edwin Wheeler Reserve on Thursday 20 February.

The event is being held in advance of the closure of the Liverpool Animal Shelter on 19 March, providing an opportunity for residents to ensure their pets are microchipped and vaccinated.

“Council’s free microchipping and vaccination day is about encouraging responsible pet ownership,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

“Even if your pets are already microchipped, ensure your contact details are up to date so pets can be reunited with loved ones if they go missing.

“It’s also important to keep your pets up-to-date with vaccinations so they don’t fall ill.”

Council’s free microchipping and vaccination day, to be held from 10am – 2pm on Thursday 20 February at Edwin Wheeler Reserve in Sadleir, will also include giveaways and a sausage sizzle.

Due to high demand, free vaccinations are available only for pension or health care card holders and bookings are essential. Residents must call 0432 884 400 to book in their pet.

The Liverpool Animal Shelter will continue to offer free microchipping as one of its standard services until it closes on 19 March.

“Temporary arrangements have been made for pets found in the Liverpool LGA to be taken to the Blacktown City Animal Holding Facility and cared for per Council’s existing no-kill policy until they are returned to their owners or rehomed,” Mayor Waller said.

“Plans for a state-of-the-art super shelter in Blacktown are on public exhibition and once complete in 2022 it will become the permanent facility for taking in lost pets from several council areas in Sydney, including Liverpool.

“Council will maintain its existing roster of rangers to help reunite lost pets with their owners, so it’s important that pet owners ensure their animals are microchipped.”

Future pet adoptions will be managed by the Animal Holding Facility in Blacktown until the new ‘super shelter’ is opened and pets found in Liverpool are relocated there.

Council’s microchipping and vaccination day is supported by the NSW Government and sponsored by RSPCA NSW.
