The Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Learning Centre is having solar panels installed to offset the annual electricity cost of operating the building and save 93 tonnes greenhouse gas emissions.
The installation is part of the Local Government Energy Savers Program with funding from Sustainability Victoria.
Mayor, Cr Danny Claridge said the installation of solar panels and other energy efficient devices is important.
“These panels are a greener solution to operating our venues. This and the fact that they will relieve pressure on the Council budget is important,” Cr Claridge said.
Through the Local Government Energy Savers Program, the Council has also installed solar panels at the Senior Citizens Community Centre, and LED lighting at the Senior Citizens Community Centre, Town Hall, Library and Benalla Art Gallery.
This install is expected to result in annual electricity savings of around $25,000 and 93 tonnes greenhouse gas savings. A display monitor will be installed somewhere within the library for education/engagement of patrons.
