Crews push through weather on huge Council project

Despite the recent wet weather in the region, Gympie Regional Council has commenced what is the largest ‘in house’ construction project in recent times. Investigator Avenue is one of the most used roads on the Cooloola Coast and Council’s road widening and drainage project is set to deliver a range of safety and functionality improvements.     

“The Investigator Avenue road widening project will deliver a safer and better functioning road for residents in Cooloola Cove,” said Cr Mark McDonald.  

The project includes the widening of Investigator Avenue to 10 metres, construction of concrete kerbing, a 1.5 metre wide concrete footpath, stormwater pits and underground pipes, rebuilding driveways, planting new street trees, laying turf, and installing LED streetlights to light the new footpath between Nautilus Drive and Queen Elizabeth Drive, Cooloola Cove. 

Half of the $3.6 million project budget is funded by Council, with the remaining funds coming via the State through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) program. 

The project will be entirely carried out by Gympie Regional Council construction crews and is the biggest ever construction project carried out entirely by Council staff.  

“The staff on the ground have put a tremendous amount of work into this project,” Cr McDonald said.     

“This work has been highly anticipated for those residents in Cooloola Cove.  

“While the rain and wet weather have provided some challenges, the crews are working through to get the job done.

“I would also like to thank the Queensland Government for their contribution towards this project,” he said.  

It is anticipated the project will take approximately six months to complete.
