Hutchinson Builders will start work at Kleinton on the latest of Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) modern waste management facility after turning the first official sod on the project. The $13.9 million contract for the new Tier 2 waste management facility is expected to be completed in 2021 and will cater to the growth of the region in the north. TRC Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Nancy Sommerfield said the new transfer station would be built over the existing landfill site, that has reached capacity, and an adjacent parcel of land that is already owned by Council. “This state-of-the-art facility will be the fifth project delivered under the Waste Infrastructure Plan,” Cr Sommerfield said. “The Kleinton waste management facility will deliver environmental benefits to the area and much greater opportunities for recycling. “The new facility will look familiar to customers because the design is a smaller version of the new Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility. “As a region, our communities have embraced the need to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill and this new facility will build on our region’s culture to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’. “The new facility will modernise the Council’s network of waste facilities and maintain our high service level where 98% of the Region’s population lives within a 20-minute drive of a waste management facility.” TRC Water and Waste Committee Portfolio Leader, Cr Bill Cahill said the new facility would be a cleaner and tidier waste solution with the waste stored on pavement and transported to landfill locations offsite. “The design of the waste management facility will help to reduce the odour, dust and animal/rodent control required,” Cr Cahill said. “Litter prevention controls will be put in place to contain windblown litter from the facility. “The current waste facility will continue to function while construction is underway, although there will be some temporary changes to traffic flow and there may be some temporary changes to operating hours, depending on construction requirements. “Council will try to make the transition to the new facility as smooth as possible for customers, and we will continue to update the community on construction progress. “The existing landfill site will be rehabilitated as part of the project. These rehabilitation works include the capping of the old landfill.” Hutchinson Builders will now commence construction of the new waste transfer station with an expected completion date in 2021.
