Local families going through trying times are being offered a helping hand by country based grassroots charity Aussie Helpers.

The charity’s Dubbo Depot coordinator Katie O’Brien is a Tottenham local who has been volunteering for the past 18 months.

Katie said she began volunteering with the charity after “seeing how important a charity like Aussie Helpers is within our farming community.

“It really gives a pivotal support network for our farmers and I know firsthand how a little assistance goes a long way,” she said. “Just having someone take the time to visit or check in on you is instrumental and to not feel alone in such trying times”.

Katie says Aussie Helpers has assisted hundreds of families in Lachlan Shire.

“My role as coordinator is to reach out to our farmers and their communities and help provide some assistance. The Aussie Helpers’ goal is to keep farmers on their land when times get tough,” she said.

“Help from our organisation includes face-to-face visits to each property in the area, food, personal items, clothing, kids’ school fees, hay, fodder stock feed ( Bulka bags of pellets or grain, minerals, lick blocks, dog food, molasses etc), fuel and eftpos cards.

“Aussie Helpers is a self-funded charitable organisation that has been operating for the past 17 years and with no support of the Government. That’s right, we only exist because of the many supportive caring Aussie’s who donate every year to our charity to keep our good work going. Power of the People!”
