Top Aussie Authors to shine a light on Rural Literature at Words Out West

Some of the country’s best female authors and creators will offer an insight into life on the land when the inaugural Words Out West Readers and Writers Festival kicks off this Friday in Dalby.

A stellar line-up of authors, bloggers, podcasters, and illustrators will headline the Festival, with some big names including Fleur McDonald, Rachael Treasure, and Hayley Maudsley.

From fictional tales across Australia, to captivating artwork and life-hacks for modern-day families, Words Out West has something to ignite the creative spark in everyone.

Much-loved country author and social media identity Hayley Maudsley said Words Out West would give the region the same opportunities as metropolitan areas.

“I feel honoured to be presenting because at the end of the day I am a regular wife, mother, daughter and friend, and published author which I hope to encourage any

one else who is on the edge or not sure where to start, to move forward,” Mrs Maudsley said.

“People can expect a down to earth presentation from a regular stay at home mum and I hope to inspire and reiterate that “You can do it too.”

Australian rural literature Author Fleur McDonald said the event was a great opportunity to support both writers and readers, and a chance to hear some great stories from the country.   

“I’ve lived in the country all my life, save for five years when I was at boarding school. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I love the space, the air, the smells, the lifestyle. Obviously when you love the bush as much as I do, it’s hard not to implement it in my work somehow. I guess, also, writing about what I know gives the work authenticity, which is really important,” Mrs McDonald said.  

“You’ll hear stories of my research into rural crime – stories straight from detectives I’ve interviewed and who have been on the ground investigating all types of rural crime. I’ll talk about the writing process and a little bit about my life in farming.” 

Words Out West will also welcome several presenters who are born and bred Western Downs locals including Lydia Burton, Sophie Volker, Jo Cuskelly, Karen Land, and Jane Grieve.

With the event just days away, people are being reminded to get in fast to book their tickets.

Council spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said residents still had time to book in for their favourite sessions and hear from some of the best in the business.

“While tickets will still be available for purchase on the day, spaces are filling up fast, and I encourage residents to head to the Words Out West website to secure their seat,” Cr Maguire said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from renowned Australian literary professionals right here on home soil and another premier event for our region.”
