Two opportunities for free waste disposal

Free green waste disposal until 26 Feb – and find out if you’re eligible for free household waste disposal

Following the declaration of Byron Shire as a natural disaster zone last week, two separate opportunities are now open to residents for free waste disposal at the Byron Resource Recovery Centre in Myocum.

“The first opportunity is for Byron Shire residents whose properties were damaged directly as a result of last week’s severe weather event and therefore have unexpected flood-damaged household waste as a result,” Byron Shire Council’s Acting Director Infrastructure Services, Cameron Clark said.

“This could be things like damaged carpets, floors and furniture or appliances,” he said.

Residents with damaged household waste should check with their insurer in the first instance, as waste disposal may be covered within their policy.  As flooding occurred in isolated areas, residents affected are asked to contact Council and have their situation assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Residents wishing to have fees waived for flood affected waste can contact the Byron Resource Recovery Centre (BRRC) Hotline on 1300 652 625.  Proof of address will be required at the weighbridge.

Free Green Waste Disposal for all residents for two weeks

“The second opportunity is for all Byron Shire residents to drop their green waste at the BRRC at no charge until 4pm, Wednesday 26 February,” Mr Clark said.

Please note, this waiver does not apply to commercial operators, who will be charged the appropriate gate fee.

“We encourage people to take advantage of this opportunity for free green waste disposal, but you will need to bring proof of residency such as driver’s licence or rates notice and present it at the weighbridge to qualify for your free green waste disposal.

“Also please keep in mind that the Resource Recovery Centre will be excessively busy over this period as we work to assist as many people as we can, as quickly as we can within existing resourcing,” he said.

All customers will be required to enter and exit over the weighbridge, regardless of whether they are making a payment or not.

“We would be grateful for your patience and understanding at this time,” Mr Clark said.
