Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will complete a review of its Waste Infrastructure Plan to determine the location and timing of future waste management facilities for the region.

Council today (February 18) endorsed the strategic review at its February Ordinary meeting after rescinding a 2018 decision to build a Tier Two waste management facility on Council-owned land at Wyreema.

TRC Water and Waste Committee chair Cr Nancy Sommerfield said Council had identified several significant project constraints during the design process for the Wyreema facility.

Cr Sommerfield said Council would revisit its Waste Infrastructure Plan to review current operational and service levels for the southern area.

“Council also has considered community feedback on the proposed Wyreema facility, in conjunction with landfill plans that have highlighted that a number of surrounding landfill sites potentially could be used for longer than previously anticipated,” Cr Sommerfield said.

“The design work has identified constraints around safe access to the facility and a range of issues relating to the on-site management of protected flora and fauna.

“This has highlighted a need to conduct a broader review of our operations and service levels, particularly in the southern region.

“This review will be presented to Council for further consideration by July this year to determine the proposed location and timing of future waste facility upgrades to ensure we maintain appropriate service levels and cater for future growth.”
