Volunteer registrations for Clean Up Australia Day 2020 are now open, with Huon Valley Council supporting community members, groups, businesses and schools to hold clean ups in their local area between Tuesday 25 February and Sunday 1 March.

“Council is pleased to be supporting local clean-up groups who register their site online by providing them with free waste disposal vouchers for any of our Waste Transfer Stations in Huonville, Cygnet, Geeveston and Dover,” said Huon Valley Council Mayor Bec Enders.

“Make sure to register your site on the Clean Up Australia Day website,” said Cr Enders. “Council will then contact you to provide your free waste disposal voucher. A range of promotional materials are also available on the Clean Up Australia Day website to help you get the word out about your event.”

Clean Up Australia Day is the nation’s largest community-based mobilisation event, and last year more than 680,000 volunteers removed over 15,000 ute-loads of rubbish from the 6,901 registered locations across the country.

According to the Department of the Environment and Energy’s National Waste Report 2018, Australia creates 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year. Only 12 per cent of this is recycled, with the rest ending up in our parks, roadsides, bush, waterways, oceans or in landfill as rubbish.

“Last year more than 680,000 volunteers removed over 15,000 ute-loads of rubbish from the 6,901 registered locations across the country.”

“For 30 years now we’ve been cleaning up Australia,” said Clean Up Australia Chairman Pip Kiernan. “If people are unable to join a Clean Up on March 1, they can step up by donating to help us all year round.”

100 per cent of funds raised through donations are put towards getting free educational resources and clean-up materials to community, school and youth groups across the nation throughout the year. If you can’t join the Clean Up but would like to Step Up and make a donation to Clean Up Australia, head to cleanup.org.au. Clean Up Australia is a registered charity and all donations over $2 are tax deductible.
