In a win for the sports community of Bayside, the renewed pavilion at William Street Reserve in Brighton was officially opened on 19 February 2020 and is ready to service sporting participants from across the region.
Council invested $2.38 million to the project, which is the 12th pavilion delivered as part of Council’s $52 million investment to upgrade all 27 sports pavilions in Bayside by 2025.
Bayside Mayor, Cr Clarke Martin said the renewal has transformed the pavilion into a great community asset.
“It’s exciting to see the sportsground pavilion improvement plan delivering quality sports pavilions that are inclusive of all participants and is another step towards providing facilities that are appropriate for all abilities and genders,” Cr Martin said.
Providing outstanding new facilities, this pavilion features gender-neutral changerooms and umpire facilities, kiosk, community space, first aid and storage areas.
The pavilion provides a public toilet to service the broader reserve and a seating area for community members to sit and enjoy the various activities undertaken at the reserve. The path surrounding the building and wide entries provide access to families and individuals with mobility issues.
In line with Council’s Sustainable Infrastructure Policy and our commitment to being carbon neutral by 2020, the environmentally sensitive design includes solar panels and the latest in LED lighting technology.
“This is a pavilion that we can all be proud of and we hope Bayside’s sports community enjoys the new amenities,” Cr Martin said.
Designed by local Cohen Leigh Architects and constructed by Melbcon, the pavilion took just under eight months to build and provides a slice of International Cricket history right here in Bayside.
The Cluden Cricket Club, who have been summer tenants at the site for 97 years, procured a custom made replica of the Father Time Weathervane from Lord’s Cricket Ground. Coupled with the white picket fence around the ground, the reserve has a distinct English country feel.
The William Street Reserve pavilion now provides a modern and adaptable facility to support year round sport at the site.
