The Dutch know a thing or two about parking bikes efficiently in public places. After all, there are 54 million bikes in a small country like the Netherlands.
Bike racks similar to ones seen throughout the Northern European country are now in Manly.
Cyclists now have a safe, secure place to lock up their bikes. Council’s new bike racks at Manly Wharf allow up to 102 bicycles to be stored at any one time.
The new racks will help solve the problem cyclists often encounter in trying to find suitable spots to lock up their bikes while either in Manly or commuting via bus or ferry from Manly Wharf.
It’s all part of Council’s Transport Strategy to encourage people to use their vehicles less and alternative forms of transport more such as bikes.
Manly Wharf is a major transport hub and destination where many commuters travel to by bicycle. Over 300 people park their bikes at Manly Wharf on a normal week day.
Council’s regular community consultation has found that additional bike parking at Manly Wharf was keenly sought.
At present, the bike racks are on trial and Council will monitor usage patterns and required maintenance.
The new racks allow bikes to be easily parked alongside one another without the cramping problems present with many bike rack configurations.
