Everything you need to know about Highway to Hell

Fremantle will be the place to be this weekend after the trucks from the Perth Festival’s Highway to Hell have rolled on by.

The climax of the 2020 Perth Festival will be celebration of the life and music of a Fremantle rock ‘n’ roll icon – the late, great AC/DC front man Bon Scott.

Taking inspiration from the AC/DC classic ‘Highway to Hell’ – Canning Highway will be transformed into the world’s longest stage, with a host of local and international artists performing AC/DC songs from stages on the back of semi-trailers in a slow ‘hit parade’ from Applecross to Fremantle.

The show will start at 5pm on Sunday at Canning Bridge and roll through special activity zones at Tompkins Park and the Leopold Hotel before arriving at the Container Rainbow in Fremantle from 7.25pm.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said there would be heaps of special AC/DC themed events happening in Freo both before and after Highway to Hell.

“Bon Scott is one of Freo’s favourite sons, and there’s no better way to get into the spirit of Highway to Hell than to pay your respects at Bon’s grave at Fremantle Cemetery or get a photo with his famous statue at Fishing Boat Harbour,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“Lots of different venues around Fremantle are putting on special Highway to Hell after parties, so once the trucks have rolled by everyone should get on down to Freo and celebrate one of the true legends of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Fremantle Arts Centre is hosting a free Highway to Hell pre-party from 2-4pm, featuring The Little Lord Street Band and a special appearance by the WA Police Pipe Band.

The Naval Store, with its iconic octopus mural right next to the Rainbow stage, will be open from 3pm until late. This new event space will be open to the public for the first time since 1935.

Entertainment at the Rainbow stage starts at 5pm with students from John Curtin College of the Arts, followed by DJ Shazza Dacca on Champagne Charlie and the Voice Moves WA mass choir.

Once the last of the trucks has arrived at 8.30pm DJs Kester Sappho and Timothy Nelson will see the crowd through to the event close 9.30pm.

Fremantle venues hosting Highway to Hell after parties include Mojo’s Bar in North Fremantle, The Newport Hotel, Clancy’s Fish Pub, Freo.Social, Ronnie Nights and Metropolis Fremantle.
