Comedian Jimeoin is a master of making the mundane hilariously funny. His jokes are as clever as they are swift, no funny business…well, maybe just a little.
Jimeoin is bringing his latest show – Ramble On! – to Maroondah as part of this year’s The Ringwood Carnival from 27 March to 5 April 2020.
He says audiences can expect his usual observational brand of comedy; a trademark style that’s worked for him for the better part of 30 years.
“[It’ll be] the same old me to a large extent. It’s not like I’ve started doing political commentary or satire. I make fun of myself and hopefully people can relate to it,” he says.
Armed with his cheeky smile, expressive eyebrows and signature Northern-Irish brogue, the Melbourne-based comic has made a successful career on the back of random musings about life’s odd nuances and petty annoyances.
On paper, his topics might read as incredibly mundane – kettles that boil too loudly and remembering when it’s bin night don’t exactly scream funny – but it is the most banal human behaviour that works for him – which gets the laughs.
Jimeoin finds the humour in the little things: the flight problems of bumblebees; the subtle-yet-important distinctions found in eyebrow movements; even the virtues of top-loading washing machines are fertile ground.
Often there is no punch line attached, just the occasional eyebrow raise and exaggerated mime that he’s known for.
By his own admission, he had never even seen a stand-up gig before he did his own.
He unwittingly stumbled into his own first show after a friend, he says, dared him to get up at an open mic night in Sydney back in the early 1990s.
“[I got my start] in the Harold Park hotel in Sydney. They had a tryout night and a girl put my name down. I told a couple of jokes and watched the rest of the night and was hooked,” Jimeoin says.
Asked if he’s ever forgotten the punch line?
“I often forget what is next. But then the audience doesn’t know either, so it doesn’t really matter. I just do what comes into my head on the night. Just trying to have as much fun as possible,” Jimeoin adds.
His tongue-in-cheek manner has made him a perennial favourite on the festival circuit. He has performed around the world and is a regular invitee to the Mecca of comedy, Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival.
While he prefers to give topics, like politics, a wide berth, there is one basic comedy rule he prescribes to: and that’s to be able to laugh at yourself.
“I always laugh at my own jokes when I first hear them. I always enjoy doing them for a period of time, then I get sick of them,” he says.
His show Ramble On! is just that – Jimeoin rambling through relatable observations about the minutiae of everyday life.
Catch Jimeon live in Ramble On! for The Ringwood Carnival on Wednesday 1 April 2020.
