Generous Donation of Nest Boxes from Bulli Woonona Men’s Shed

In response to the devastating fires that have impacted the wildlife of Wollondilly Shire, the Bulli Woonona Men’s Shed have generously donated 50 nest boxes which will provide much needed homes to local wildlife affected by the recent fires. Members of the Men’s Shed have constructed 10 different types of nest boxes suited for animals such as parrots, possums, pardelotes, gliders, microbats, lorikeets, antechinus and pigmy possums. Wollondilly Mayor Matthew Deeth expressed his thanks, saying “We acknowledge that this is a very generous contribution from the Bulli Woonona Men’s Shed.” “The wildlife in our Shire has been heavily impacted by the recent fires - these nest boxes will provide much needed homes to the many species of birds that we are fortunate to have in our area.” “Council has already identified 20 to 30 locations within Council reserves where these nest boxes will be installed.” “As the nest boxes are quite specialised for particular species we want to ensure that they are being installed in the right locations.” Most wildlife need tree hollows for shelter, but trees can take 100 or more years to develop hollows. The bushfires destroyed many trees with hollows where birds usually nest, so where these natural hollows are limited, nest boxes are a great substitute. Council encourages leaving out clean fresh water for wildlife and has been working on providing some water stations throughout the Shire in fire and drought affected areas.
