Gold Coasters asked to help make city sparkle

The City is calling on all Gold Coasters to help make the city sparkle this Clean Up Australia Day.

1 March 2020 marks the 30th anniversary for Clean Up Australia Day – the nation’s largest community based environmental event.

Mayor Tom Tate encouraged all residents to lend a hand and register their involvement online.

“With all the rain the Gold Coast has received over the last few weeks, rubbish has been washed into our waterways and beaches,” said Mayor Tom Tate.

“Now is the perfect time to pitch in to keep our beautiful city clean.

“In 2019, the City recorded its highest number of registered clean up sites, with 146 sites and around 2,800 volunteers involved in the event.

“So far this year, we have already beaten last year’s record, with over 150 clean up sites registered on the Gold Coast.

“Around 320 tonnes of rubbish was collected on the Gold Coast at Clean Up Australia Day last year.

“That’s equivalent to around 320 small cars worth of rubbish, and is the largest quantity of rubbish we have cleaned up since the City first participated in the event in 1997.

“On the 30 year anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day, I encourage the community, schools, young people and especially businesses to participate or partner, and ‘Step Up to Clean Up’.”
