Council has welcomed the Victorian Government’s announcement that residents around the state will soon follow Council’s lead and implement a four bin kerbside collection service.
Earlier this month Council introduced a new system comprising a rubbish/general waste bin (red lid), recycling bin (yellow lid), glass-only bin (purple lid) and a food organics garden organics (FOGO) bin (lime green lid).
Director Assets and Operations, Shane Walden, said Council had been leading the way with its approach to reducing waste to landfill by implementing the new system.
“We’ve been working hard to find innovative solutions to the recycling crisis in partnership with our community,” Mr Walden said.
“Our customers have been very supportive over the last three weeks in embracing the change and sorting their waste into the various bins.
“This has ensured we can minimise the amount of waste going to landfill and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
“We are pleased the rest of the state will join us and other fellow Councils who are rolling out changes and leading innovation in this area.”
All residents who receive the kerbside collection service have been provided with glass-only bins (approximately 20,000 new bins). The FOGO service is being phased in over five years. Around 14,000 residents and ratepayers have been supplied with kitchen caddies and compostable caddy liners as part of the first stage of the FOGO rollout and garden bins, now known as FOGO bins. These have been supplied to those who did not already have one. A comprehensive education campaign has accompanied rollout of the new system.
Mr Walden thanked Sustainability Victoria for its funding which assisted Council in the rollout of the FOGO program.
