While, as of March 25, 2020, there have been no confirmed coronavirus cases in our Shire, the Department of Health is encouraging everyone to consider that the virus is in our towns.
They recommend that everyone should immediately embrace social distancing and hygiene controls that have been recommended as these are the most effective ways to reduce transmission of the virus.
We should be avoiding social interactions, travel and, unless absolutely necessary, we should remain in our homes for the foreseeable future. The medical experts believe that it is not a case of if the virus is confirmed in our shire, but when.
The NSW Government announced a $2.3 billion health boost and economic stimulus package to help tackle the COVID-19 outbreak last week.
NSW Health will receive $700 million to assist in doubling ICU capacity, preparing for additional COVID-19 testing, purchasing additional ventilators and medical equipment, establishing acute respiratory clinics and bringing forward elective surgeries to private hospitals.
The most common symptoms of coronavirus are fever, sore throat and dry cough. Symptoms will generally appear three-four days after exposure to the virus but can be up to 14 days later.
Anyone who believes they have may have contracted the virus are advised to call the coronavirus hotline 1800 022 222. Or you may Contact your GP to arrange an appointment (let GP practice know in advance if you have symptoms)
The following are ways to reduce potential transmission:
• avoiding crowds and mass gatherings
• avoiding small gatherings in enclosed spaces
• keep a distance of 1.5 metres between themselves and other people
• avoiding shaking hands, hugging, or kissing other people
• avoiding visiting vulnerable people, such as those in aged care facilities or hospitals.
