Like the rest of Australia and all around the world, life on the Northern Beaches is a bit strange right now as a result of the evolving situation with COVID-19 (Coronavirus).
Many in our community are self-isolating in their homes and keeping their distance from friends, loved ones and neighbours. Social and face to face events have been postponed but there has never been a more important time to band together. This year’s Neighbour Day (Sunday 29 March) acts as a particularly timely reminder to support everyone in our community.
Here are seven ways you can still help your neighbour and those around you right now:
Leave a note in your neighbour’s letterbox asking if they need anything, and pass on your contact details so they can get in touch. Be particularly mindful of those who are self-isolating or quarantined and if you can, offer to pick up groceries or medicine and leave it at their door.Have a phone call with your older relatives – you might be the only person they hear from today.Shop local wherever you can! If you’re able to, order take away from your local café or restaurant, buy online from your favourite local boutique and purchase gift vouchers to beauty salons and shops.Be mindful and extra nice to those working in supermarkets right now, it has been a long couple of weeks for them.Take some time to write cards to your overseas relatives, send photos too!Facetime, call, text, Snapchat – however you reach out to your family and friends, and ask if they are okay. Call Lifeline on 13 11 14 if you or anyone you know needs support.Don’t horde pantry items, there’s plenty to go around.Remember we’re in this together, so please look out for each other and wash your hands.
