Burn at Baxter Park

Frankston City Council will conduct a prescribed burn at Baxter Park today (Tuesday 24 March) from 1pm.

The purpose of this burn is to reduce fuel loads in bushland adjacent to private property and minimise risk to the community during the next bushfire season.

Frankston City Mayor, Sandra Mayer said despite the unprecedented challenges of Coronavirus, Council was continuing to deliver essential services to the community.

“We are prioritising this burn now so that the community is protected in summer.

“Conditions around the park may be smoky for the next day or so and I’d like to thank residents for their understanding,” Cr Mayer said.

“Lighting is expected to be completed at around 6pm this evening but to ensure the site is safe, crews will be at the park overnight and throughout Wednesday and Thursday.

“To minimise their risk of exposure to Coronavirus we will be keeping officer numbers low, maintaining hygiene practices and physical separation whenever possible.”

Smoke may affect Barmah Court, Moorooduc Highway and Frankston Flinders Road to the north of Baxter Park and remain in the local area for around 24 hours.

Residents directly adjoining the planned burn site to the north have been notified and signage will be erected around the reserve.

Bushland areas of Baxter Park will be closed to public and residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed and washing off the line during smoky conditions.
