Media Release: West Tamar Council Proposed Rate Relief 30.03.2020

SUBJECT:

West Tamar Council Proposed Rate Relief

FROM:

Mayor, Christina Holmdahl

DATE:

Monday 30th March 2020

The West Tamar Council understands that the COVID-19 pandemic is having a profound effect on our community. With a social and economic impact being felt, many will be experiencing some degree of financial and personal hardship.

The safety and well-being of our staff, Councillors, volunteers and the community continues to be our top priority. Therefore, we believe that it’s necessary to ease the community’s burden wherever possible.

On Friday the 27th of March, the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) held a General Meeting and afterwards put out a Media Release detailing that in principle support has been given to a 0% increase on general rates for 2020-21.

Whilst there has not been time for Council to formally consider all of the matters discussed at the meeting, we will be taking this proposal as a motion for ratification to a future Council Meeting. At this stage, it is anticipated that the West Tamar Council will not be increasing the general rate for the coming financial year 2020/21.

A range of measures are currently being discussed around how we can further support our community, and these will be announced and implemented over the coming weeks.

This is a rapidly changing situation and we will continue to update our community as things progress.
