Marion Bay Prescribed Burn Cancelled

Yorke Peninsula Council has been advised by the Department of Environment and Water (DEW) that the Marion Bay prescribed burn unfortunately, due to current COVID-19 restrictions has been cancelled and will be rescheduled in 2021.

Following bushfire concerns raised by residents, The Yorke Peninsula Council, in conjunction with the Country Fire Service (CFS) and Department for Environment and Water (DEW), initiated a public consultation for the burn in August 2019. The result of this consultation was to undertake a 9 hectare prescribed burn in April 2020 on the west side of Marion Bay between Lowan Drive and Willyama Drive.

The purpose of this burn was to create a fuel reduced area to limit the spread and impact of bushfire toward Marion Bay from the west. Fuel loads in the area are currently very high to extreme and the consequence of a bushfire would be devastating.

Involved stakeholders managing the burn are currently unable to safely manage the social distancing, hygiene, catering and accommodation requirements associated with COVID-19 protocols. The current priority for all stakeholders is ensuring we are achieving our current social responsibilities for the community during the pandemic.

Council’s Senior Compliance Officer Phil Herrmann reinforced “staying bushfire ready is a shared responsibility where we all have a role to play. By ensure your property and family is protected appropriately against fire danger you are helping us, help you”.
