Join the Moree Community Library on Wednesday 11 March from 5.30pm for their ‘A Night with an Astrophysicist’, exploring the spectacular photographs of the night sky captured in the David Malin Awards: Winning Sky Photos 2019 exhibition and a presentation from astrophysicist Karlie Noon.
A Night with an Astrophysicist will provide residents of all ages the opportunity to learn about astronomy from astrophysicist Karlie Noon while looking through the award-winning entries of the David Malin Awards: Winning Sky Photos 2019 exhibition which is currently on display at the Moree Community Library until Sunday 22 March 2020.
Big Sky Libraries Manager Sally Walters is overjoyed with the opportunities the Library is able to offer the Moree community this year.
“Locking in big attractions like the David Malin photo exhibition and an expert presentation from Karlie Noon is an exciting opportunity for the Library and we are proud to be able to offer these experiences to our community,” said Mrs Walters.
“Karlie Noon is an amazing woman. She is a Gamilaraay woman and the first Indigenous woman in Australia to graduate with a double degree in maths and physics; she was a Eureka Prize nominee and in 2017 named one of BBC’s 100 women.
“Karlie will provide an extra layer of information about the photos in the exhibition which will enable the public to take a deep-dive into learning about all things space-related and broaden their understanding of astronomy.”
The Central West Astronomical Society organise the David Malin Awards as part of their annual AstroFest held at Parkes, NSW and the photographs were judged by a world-renowned astrophotographer, Dr David Malin. The tour of the exhibition is organised by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
The eight categories in the competition included Deep Sky, Wide-Field, Solar System, Nightscapes, Animated Sequences (Scientific and Aesthetic), Junior and a Themed Section - Memories of Apollo; the winning entries of each category were shortlisted to be chosen as the cover image for the 2020 edition of the Australasian Sky Guide.
The Library’s ‘A Night with an Astrophysicist’ will begin at 5.30pm on Wednesday, 11 March at the Moree Community Library with all ages welcome to attend, light refreshments will be provided.
