International pilots are ready to take flight in the world-class hang gliding competition, Dalby Big Air, on the Western Downs this April.
Independently funded and hosted by the Dalby Hang Gliding Club, Dalby Big Air will showcase pilots from an intermediate to advanced level from Sunday 5 to Saturday 11 April.
In preparation to host 60 pilots, the event is set to boost the tourism and economic growth of the region and showcase the breadth of sporting opportunities available on the Western Downs.
Dalby Big Air is expected to welcome approximately 15 international pilots who will be flying to Australia solely for this event on the Western Downs.
Western Downs Regional Council Community and Liveability General Manager Jodie Taylor said the event will be a valuable contribution to the region’s tourism industry.
“This event will be a fantastic tourism opportunity for our entire region, showing off the unique experiences we have to offer on the Western Downs,” Mrs Taylor said.
“As a Council we are huge advocates for the great liveability of our region which includes our valued recreational and sporting spaces so it will be great to see our Dalby Aerodrome utilised for this event.
“The event is entirely funded and run by the Dalby Hang Gliding Club which is a very impressive effort and confirms the community pride demonstrated by our sporting associations.”
Dalby Big Air Event Organiser Bruce Crerar started hang gliding in 1982 and said the event was purely aimed at offering pilots a fun atmosphere that highlights the best of hang gliding in country Queensland.
“Our event has been running for 20 years and we’re humbled that Western Downs Regional Council gives us the opportunity to deliver it – it’s about fun and enjoyment as much as it is about the competition,” Mr Crerar said.
“All our tug pilots are experienced with most having towed at World Championships and they are dedicated to keeping you as safe as possible so you can enjoy flying in this beautiful part of the world.
“We want this competition to be about keeping us old guys flying while hoping the younger generation realise there is more fun and reward in air space than cyber space.
“Those in the club have a love for flying and a love for Dalby so we really appreciate the relationship we have with Council and we’re very thankful to the local commercial airport operators for their support.”
Dalby Big Air will invite a broad demographic of competitors including business owners, a specialist surgeon, ex-fighter pilots, flight instructors and a range of engineers from across Australia and internationally.
Spectators are welcome at the event offering another opportunity to head outdoors and experience the region’s vibrant active communities.
