Win up to $5,000 for a garden or environmental project with Back to Earth! Published: 2 March 2020

Could your kindergarten use some fresh compost and up to $5,000 for a veggie patch? Or perhaps your school could benefit from some new fruit trees?

What about that languishing community garden in need of a refresh? Yes?

Then get ready to enter the Back to Earth Initiative Victorian Garden Competition 2020!

Cardinia Shire Council is encouraging community groups to enter the Back to Earth initiative by answering a series of questions (with short answers under 100 words each) in an online form on the Back to Earth website at www.backtoearth.vic.gov.au

Victorians will then have the chance to vote for the winner who will receive up to $5,000 for their project and a truckload of compost!

The Back to Earth Initiative Victorian Garden Competition is run by the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group and 28 Victorian Councils to demonstrate how the green waste put in household green bins is turned into something valuable — compost.

Composting is a natural process of decomposition and produces useful materials that can be put back into the earth to improve soil.

Composting turns food and green waste into a range of high quality, natural soil conditioning products such as mulches, composts, blended soils and potting mixes used in landscaping, horticulture and agriculture.

These products take food and green waste “back to earth”, enriching the soil and helping to grow healthy crops and pastures that produce food for everyone. Today’s food and green waste can grow tomorrow’s lunch!
