Koondrook reserve and swimming pool name changes proposed

Residents are invited to provide feedback on a Gannawarra Shire Council proposal to rename two locations in Koondrook.

Councillors at the December 2019 Ordinary Council Meeting authorised Council to advertise the proposed renaming of the Koondrook Environmental Reserve and Koondrook Swimming Pool, enacting upon a request from the Koondrook Development Committee to formalise the names of a number of parks and reserves in Koondrook to more closely reflect names in current use.

Council is proposing renaming the Koondrook Environmental Reserve - bordered by Koondrook-Murrabit Road, Penglase Street and View Street - to the Sidney Reid Reserve.

“Sidney Reid came to Koondrook to manage the Koondrook redgum sawmill for the Estate of the late Alexander Arbuthnot, and at the time of his death in 1962, Sidney was the managing director of the Arbuthnot Sawmill,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“During his time in Koondrook, Sidney had a deep sense of citizenship to which he made a generous contribution. This included time as secretary of the Koondrook Race Club, a member of the Koondrook Progress Association, Koondrook Hall Committee and many other local organisations.”

Meanwhile, Council is also seeking to change the name of the Koondrook Swimming Pool to Willow Park Reserve – formalising the name Koondrook residents call the venue.

“Koondrook residents regularly refer the town’s swimming pool and adjoining tennis club complex as Willow Park, and this process will formalise the name this location is known as,” Mayor Learmonth said.

Any person wishing to submit feedback can do so by providing their response in writing via email to [email protected], deliver in person at Gannawarra Shire Council offices located at 47 Victoria Street, Kerang or 23-25 King Edward Street, Cohuna or by post to PO Box 287, Kerang VIC 3579.

Submissions close at 5pm on Monday, 30 March 2020.
