The South Gardens are considered an unsuitable site for another stand-alone building.

The City of Ballarat's Lake Wendouree Masterplan and strict heritage controls for the site, which is a State Listed Heritage Place on the Victorian Heritage Register, are designed to protect this significant parkland and its heritage values.

The City of Ballarat remains committed to our ongoing maintenance and management responsibility for the site and will continue to provide extensive support for events and commemorations. We continue to recommend consideration of other ways to interpret the site, including guided tours and digital presentations, to improve the interpretation and recognition of this important National Memorial.
