Awards for those who Love to Celebrate our Seniors

It was a joyful gathering at the Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub when residents and community leaders came together to celebrate the annual Blue Mountains Seniors Week Recognition Awards 2020.

The Awards are hosted by Council as part of the Seniors Festival celebrations to acknowledge the contributions of individuals and organisations from across the Blue Mountains who contribute to the lives of our older residents.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Van der Kley, opened the ceremony and was joined by Gundungarra Elder, Mr. David King, Darug Elder, Mr Chris Tobin, Ms Suzie Van Opdorp on behalf of the Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle MP and Unit Commander Blue Mountains NSW State Emergency Service Metro, Mr. John Hughes OAM.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Van der Kley told the audience: “The theme for this year’s festival is Love to Celebrate. And it is thanks to the efforts of you all, that many seniors in our community have reason to celebrate too.”

In total, 28 individuals and 3 organisations were awarded. Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Van der Kley, said, “The list of 2020 Award winners demonstrates the extent of people in our Blue Mountains community committed to providing care and wellbeing to our older residents”

Mayor, Councillor Mark Greenhill said of this year’s recipients: “While your efforts are focused on the senior members of our community, what you do has a ripple effect. Your caring attitude, your generosity, your friendliness and your community-spirit is felt throughout our Blue Mountains and is a very important part of what makes this such a wonderful place to live. You are the reason we have an inclusive, caring and vibrant community and I thank you all for what you do.”

The 2020 Seniors Week Recognition Awards - individual recipients are: Jane Armstrong, Liz Bastian, Anne Bennett, Daniel Clift, Carol Crowther, Ellis Davidson, Jenny Fox, John Fox, Lachlan Garland, Vicki Glew, Rose Graham, Barry Groenendaal, Margaret Gudgeon, Tony Hiam, Graeme Hudson, Maxine Kerrison, Stafford Lowe, Don McGregor, Susie McGregor, John Mulquin, Michael Purtell, Murray Reid, Keith Sayles, Helen Smith, Doreen Stoodley, John Stoodley, Lisa Varjavandi and Christine Wheeler.

The 2020 Seniors Week Recognition Awards - organisation recipients are: The Palais Royale, Bendigo Bank Katoomba and Upper Blue Mountains, and the Blue Mountains Gazette. 

The 2020 Seniors Week Recognition Awards were celebrated at the Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub, Springwood, Monday, 24 February, 2020. NSW Seniors Festival is (formerly Seniors Week) is an annual celebration and the largest festival for seniors in the Southern Hemisphere and ran from 12-23 February, 2020.
