Published on 05 March 2020

Mildura Rural City Council is inviting written submissions from the community in response to its draft position paper – Call for Action on the Murray-Darling Basin.

The draft position paper was endorsed at last month’s Ordinary Council meeting and affirms Council’s support for a holistic and balanced approach to water management and a desire for a sustainable Murray-Darling Basin.

The document states that a plan is necessary to achieve this vision and outlines 24 measures aimed at achieving its objectives.

It also outlines Council’s position and calls for action in the following eight key areas relating to the Murray-Darling Basin:

Water Management in the Murray-Darling Basin Governance, Transparency and Accountability Water Markets – Trading and Ownership Agricultural Expansion Salinity Impact Zones Community Sustainability Environmental Watering Common Interests

The draft position paper can be accessed from the Have Your Say page of Council’s website at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay

Written submissions can be emailed to [email protected] or posted to PO Box 105 Mildura, Victoria 3502. Submissions must be received by Friday 3 April 2020.

Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence encouraged residents to read the draft position paper and provide their feedback.

“Our region, and our economy, is heavily reliant on the health of the Murray-Darling Basin, making it imperative to do what we can as a community to ensure it is managed sustainably,” Cr Clemence said.

“By providing feedback, residents will help shape Mildura Rural City Council’s Call for Action on the Murray-Darling Basin, ensuring it’s representative of our community’s views.

“The health and future of the Basin has a direct impact not just on our municipality’s future, but towns and cities across the Basin.

“By adding our voice to the chorus of calls for improved management of the Murray-Darling Basin we’re standing up for our community’s future, and bolstering the broader push for action.”

Once submissions have been received, they’ll be considered ahead of a final position paper being adopted by Council.
