The City of Wanneroo has achieved Gold Waterwise accreditation after meeting water usage targets for a sustainable future.

The Waterwise Council Program is run by the Water Corporation in partnership with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and aims to support local government authorities to improve their water efficiency and build ‘waterwise’ communities.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City constantly strives to enhance its environmental credentials to achieve operating efficiencies that benefit residents, businesses and our environment.

“The City initiated its commitment to becoming a Waterwise council by signing a Memorandum of Understanding, setting water efficiency goals and training staff in water efficiency,” Mayor Roberts said.

“Since making the commitment to become a Waterwise Council, we have successfully decreased our daily water use across the City of Wanneroo by 12 per cent over a 12 month period, reducing our daily potable/scheme water use from 244 kilolitres in 2016/17 to 213 kilolitres in 2018/19.

“Our residents’ total scheme water use has also decreased from 98 kilolitres to 88 kilolitres per person per year from 2016/17 to 2018/19.

“Our City is leading by example, continuing to improve our water efficiency across the board and I congratulate our residents for their sterling efforts to reduce their water use as individuals and a community.

“Caring for our planet and environment is a shared responsibility that requires a sustained and sustainable approach from residents, businesses and local government authorities.

“The City is taking important steps such as water audits, data logging to identify leaks, reviewing our irrigation systems, and setting reduction targets and benchmarks for further water saving actions which will have lasting benefits for our environment, and financial benefits too.”

The City’s water efficiency measures include:

Water audits of its top 10 water using facilities and implemented recommendations Reviewed and upgraded Kingsway Regional Open Space Irrigation System and installed a new irrigation system at Marangaroo golf course Installed sub meters and data loggers identifying water leaks (Aquamotion and at Carramar golf course) In September 2019 Council endorsed a Waterwise Council Action Plan which set water use reduction targets and outlined actions that to help achieve targets Aquamotion also achieved accreditation as a Waterwise Aquatic Centre, which involved assessing the facility’s water use, actions and savings achieved to date, setting facility specific benchmarks and targets and identifying future actions
