Have your say on the Draft Waste Strategy

Cessnock City Council is calling on the community to have their say on the draft 2020-25 Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy which is on public exhibition from 11 March to 8 April 2020. 

Waste management is a key service provided by Council involving a major cost. The strategy has been developed following community feedback and it’s extremely important community again have the opportunity to provide feedback on Council’s plan to manage waste for the future. 

Council’s waste team will host a series of drop-in sessions for community members to chat about the Draft Strategy. These will be held:

Thursday 19 March from 4-6pm Cessnock Library Tuesday 24 March from 3-5pm Greta Rotunda, New England Hwy, Greta (in conjunction with compost giveaway) Thursday 26 March from 3-5pm Poppet Head park, Kitchener (in conjunction with compost giveaway) Wednesday 1 April from 9-11am at Kurri Kurri Library 

Not only has the strategy been written to reflect community feedback received in nearly 1,000 community surveys but is also informed by a review of Council’s waste services. This review identified a range of options to ensure Council is continuing to move towards a sustainable waste management system. 

The vision for the strategy is to provide a sustainable and cost effective waste service to the Cessnock community, while prioritising waste minimisation and complying with environmental, safety and legislative obligations. 

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said managing waste is one of our greatest challenges not only locally but on a global scale.  

“We can all do our bit to divert waste from landfill and improve resource recovery and this draft Strategy is a step in the right direction for our community. If you have any questions, I encourage you to come along to one of the drop-in sessions and chat to the team.” 

The draft 2020-25 Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy can be viewed on Council’s website, in Council’s Customer Service Centre and in Cessnock City Libraries.
