This Girl Can - Enjoy Free Sports in Greater Dandenong

09 March 2020

Greater Dandenong Council has joined with Reclink Australia to encourage women to try something new and get active throughout March.

A series of free sports sessions will be held across the city to celebrate the This Girl Can campaign, which will culminate in This Girl Can Week (18-24 March).

Reclink Sports Co-ordinator Samantha Marshall said studies show that many women become less active from around the age of 15.

“There are many contributing factors, but the fear of judgement is a huge one. Sometimes women feel they are not fit enough to take part in an activity, or worry that people are watching,” Ms Marshall said.

“Sometimes the environment is not as welcoming as it could be, and for some women the issue is time and cost. But whatever the barrier is This Girl Can is just about getting more active. It doesn’t have to be competitive or intense, you just need to get out there.”

Starting on Monday 2 March, weekly sports sessions for women aged 16 and above will be held across Greater Dandenong to encourage women to try something new.

Touch Football will be held at Ross Reserve, Noble Park every Monday (except 9 March), from 4pm-5pm.

Social Soccer will be held at JC Mills Reserve, Dandenong, every Tuesday from 4pm-5pm.

Ms Marshall said the sessions would be relaxed and fun, and people could just watch from the sidelines if they did not feel ready to join in.

“We will cater for everyone, just come down and have a chat and see how much fun it can be to get active.”
